Reading
An important goal of the curriculum is to enable young learners to become fluent readers. The best way to develop pupils' comprehension skills is through reading. Every week we will add new stories for our pupils to read and a story for our pupils to listen to. Let's take a look at this weeks stories.
Weekly Stories
This week, we have added lots of stories for you to choose from over the summer. Continuing to read over the summer months gives students a chance to strengthen their skills.

Handwriting Revision
It's really important to keep up all your handwork and get some handwriting practice in over the summer. Attached below are some revision sheets you may like to try.
Here is a blank template you can download and use. On this template you can write about anything you wish.
Things to remember when writing:
1. Our writing stays on the line.
2. We use capital letters at the beginning of a sentence
3. We use full stops at the end of a sentence.
4. We use finger spaces inbetween every word.

Oral Language...
Through oral language your child develops listening and speaking skills through talk and discussion. In turn, this increases your child's knowledge of words and improves his / her listening skills.
Talk and Discussion
Talk about what is going on.
• What could you call this type of place?
• Have you ever visited a place like this?
• What time of year do you think it is?
• What clues can you find in the picture?
• What things do people enjoy doing at the beach?
• What safety rules do children need to follow when they are at the beach?
• Can you think of five things you might find or use at the beach that begin with ‘s’?
• If you were at this beach right now, what activity would you most like to take part in?
• What animals might you find at the beach? What habitats or homes do they live in?
• When the weather is not so warm, what might the beach be like? Can you describe how the picture might change?
• Imagine you are packing your bag to go to the beach. What items would you take? Mime how you would pack your bag and call out the list of items you are packing.

Weight
REMEMBER..
Weight is how heavy or how light something is.
Let's take a look at these objects and circle which you think weighs more.
Build your own balance scale
Materials: plastic hanger, two paper or plastic cups, string/yarn, hole punch.
Method:
At the top of each cup punch two holes on opposite sides and string through.
Hang the cups on the hanger and place different items in the cup to see which one is heavier.
Challenge:
Pick some small objects from inside or outside your home.
Predict which object, item will be the heaviest.
Test the items in your homemade balance scale and see if you guessed correctly.

Science: "Natural & Man Made"
This week we are learning about natural and man made objects. Man-made things are created or caused by people, rather than occurring naturally. Natural materials are sourced directly from nature -- cotton is picked from cotton plants, corn harvested from corn fields and granite is mined from quarries.
Clothes Now and Then
Clothes Now & Then
This week we are learning about clothes from the present and the past. What differences are there between old and new clothes? See if you can find any old clothes around your house and talk about them with an adult. Would you wear those old clothes today? Why? Why Not?

Night And Day
This week for Geography we are going to be looking at "Night And Day" 🌳⛪. On page 43 of your What A Wonderful World workbook you will find the page broken in half. In the first box draw two people who work at night while others sleep. In the bottom half, draw two animals that only come out at night - nocturnal animals.

School Year 2018-2019
Welcome back to all the children who have joined 1st class with Elaine and Matthew. We hope you had a lovely summer and are all ready for the wonderful things we are going to do this year. Below you will get a chance to read about some of the things we have been doing this year.
April news:
We had a very short month in school this month! We were very busy as usual in 1st class and we got to do some planting of seeds. We grew pea plants, baby carrots, runner beans and cress....it was great to see how quickly our plants grew. Kimberly's runner bean plant grew the best and it was SO tall we think a giant might have lived at the end of it!
March news:
We had lots of fun this month; our favourite day was Pancake Tuesday. We learned all about where the tradition of eating pancakes comes from. We learned lots of new things in SPHE, especially how to keep ourselves safe. We also celebrated St. Patrick's Day and we all wore green to school on Fri 15th March. It was great fun when we got to show off our costumes at assembly.
Boxing Lessons
We were very lucky to have a visit from a brilliant boxer from the senior school. We learned some boxing moves and how to skip properly. We love having visits from the senior side.
February news:
This month went really fast. We were busy doing all our great work in ALL our subjects. We have been doing amazing art with Miriam and the corridors look fab with all our artwork. We learned about the Earth and how it moves to give us the seasons and night and day. We also learned about Neil Armstrong and got to watch some slips of the 1969 Moon Landing. We think we should definitely try to get back to the moon soon.
January news:
We are back in school and really ready to get going on all our schoolwork. We have been doing great reading in our Power Hour groups and our teachers are really proud of us. We have been learning more pieces on the recorder with Niall and we are really enjoying it. We have started hurling every Friday and we love it, especially when we get to play Dodge Ball at the end of the lesson.
December news:
December has been a very busy month in 1st class! We have been busy getting ready for our school concert. We went on a trip to the Axis to see 'A Christmas Wish', it was really nice. We played the recorder and sang some songs for all our Mammies and Daddies at our Christmas concert and they thought we were brilliant! We had our school Christmas Raffle on Thursday 20th December and lots of us won prizes. But best of all.....Santa came to visit us and he had presents for everyone!
October news:
We have been working really hard since coming back to school. We are really looking forward to the Halloween break.
We have been working really hard in Power Hour and Maths Stations and our teachers are really proud of us. We have been learning all about trees, bats, and Halloween.
