10 Facts about Honey Bees
1. Honey bees are super-important pollinators for flowers, fruits and vegetables. This means that they help other plants grow! Bees transfer pollen between the male and female parts, allowing plants to grow seeds and fruit.
2. Honey bees live in hives (or colonies). The members of the hive are divided into three types: Queen: One queen runs the whole hive. Her job is to lay the eggs that will spawn the hive’s next generation of bees. The queen also produces chemicals that guide the behaviour of the other bees. Workers: these are all female and their roles are to forage for food (pollen and nectar from flowers), build and protect the hive, clean and circulate air by beating their wings. Workers are the only bees most people ever see flying around outside the hive. Drones: These are the male bees, and their purpose is to mate with the new queen. Several hundred live in each hive during the spring and summer. But come winter, when the hive goes into survival mode, the drones are kicked out! 3. What are these buzzing bugs most famous for? Delicious honey! But did you know they produce honey as food stores for the hive during winter? Luckily for us, these efficient little workers produce 2-3 time more honey than they need, so we get to enjoy the tasty treat, too! 4. If the queen bee dies, workers will create a new queen by selecting a young larva (the newly hatched baby insects) and feeding it a special food called “royal jelly“. This enables the larva to develop into a fertile queen. |
5. Honey bees are fab flyers. They fly at a speed of around 25km per hour and beat their wings 200 times per second!
6. Each bee has 170 odorant receptors, which means they have one serious sense of smell! They use this to communicate within the hive and to recognise different types of flowers when looking for food. 7. The average worker bee lives for just five to six weeks. During this time, she’ll produce around a twelfth of a teaspoon of honey. 8. The queen can live up to five years. She is busiest in the summer months, when she can lay up to 2,500 eggs a day! 9. Honey bees are also brilliant boogiers! To share information about the best food sources, they perform their ‘waggle dance’. When the worker returns to the hive, it moves in a figure-of-eight and waggles its body to indicate the direction of the food source. Cool, huh? 10. Sadly, over the past 15 years, colonies of bees have been disappearing, and the reason remains unknown. Referred to as ‘colony collapse disorder’, billions of Honey bees across the world are leaving their hives, never to return. In some regions, up to 90% of bees have disappeared! |

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM is also about helping children develop the technical, creative, and critical thinking skills they need to be part of an innovative future. Two of these skills in particular have been termed new literacies. These are vital for future communication just like reading and writing. You can choose a country to discover from this website... https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/explore/countries/ .

Once you click into a country it will show you lots of facts and pictures about that country.
Here's some examples of how your project might look... but you can do it whatever way you would like!!!

Reading is so important and the boys and girls in our classrooms have always put great effort into learning how to read and we could definitely see the benefits! This is a great resource where you can choose to read the story, listen to the story being read to you (or a little bit of both) https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome/grades-1-2-week-4.html
Remember to continue to ask and answer questions when you are reading your books. Remember our Who, What, Where, When and Why questions?

What to do during the Coronavirus break, beside Tik Tok!
2019-2020
Hi there 2nd class from Gareth and Chloe!! First of all, we really miss all of our amazing kids from 2nd class. You are a great bunch - full of happiness, energy and brains. We both can’t wait to be back in the class with you.
We know the break from school and the break from your friends can be really hard for you but it is only for a short while. We will all be back in school soon, playing games, having fun and maybe, just maybe, even learning some new things!!
Until then though, the most important thing is to look after yourselves and your family. We want you all back to us, safe and sound.
Here's a few short but fun ideas for you to try during the break. Don't feel under pressure to do them all, but if you're fed up with Tik Tok, maybe you could give them a try!
See you soon!
Gareth and Chloe
P.S. Don’t forget to wash your hands!!

Mindfulness Colouring:
Mindfulness practices can help us to increase our ability to regulate emotions and decrease stress and anxiety. There are lots of ways of practicing mindfulness. Mindfulness colouring is a nice way of relaxing. There are plenty of options on Twinkl and they have opened their website to parents and children during this time.

School Year 2017-2018
Hello from 2nd Class. Our teachers this year are Gareth and Rosemary.
Tayto Park
Second class enjoyed a trip to Tayto Park for their end of school tour. They had a great day! Enjoying the rides, visiting the factory, having a picnic and playing in the playground. It was a great way to finish off a wonderful year!
Powerhour Outdoors
When the sun is shining we like to go outside to learn. Rosemary took her Powerhour group out to read in the sun today.

Book Buddies
Rachel's senior infants and Rosemary's second class meet every Wednesday for Book Buddies. Children from second class read to the group then each second class child is paired with a senior infant and they read to each other. The children in both classes look forward to the session each week.
September Newsletter from Rosemary's Class
Our teacher Rosemary is so proud of us for all our hard work and good behaviour. We are so very excited for the year ahead.
Rediscovery Centre Ballymun
Second class were very lucky to visit the Rediscovery Centre in Ballymun recently. They learned lots about energy; it's different forms, why we need it and things that use energy. They made an oven and learned that they are black for energy efficiency.
